The Green Tortoise is hands down the best way to experience San Francisco. (more ...)
The Green Tortoise is hands down the best way to experience San Francisco. I met some of the most open-minded, fun, and interesting people I have ever met while staying there. The atmosphere is fun and inclusive and it is so easy to make friends there. Nothing beat hanging out in the ballroom all night long drinking and smoking and... talking and listening to music. The best thing about the Green Tortoise is its friendly and inclusive attitude. The employees had lots of patience with me despite all my antics and I felt very at home my entire stay there. After a week at the tortoise, it's very tempting to join the crew to stay there longer, which is what many people end up doing. I've heard so many people express the common feeling I experienced of feeling more at home at the Tortoise than anywhere else. I learned so much staying at the Green Tortoise, so much I didn't expect to learn. I met people from all over the world and learned about others' countries. I now have friends from all over the world. I experienced so much at the Tortoise, and had possibly more fun crammed into five weeks than I ever have. This is the best way to experience the city; right in the middle of it, right on the block with all the clubs and pubs downtown. Fantastic, fantastic place, and I can't wait to go back.

In as few words as possible.....: If you are an artist, musician, writer or poet, or simply a person in search of knowledge, that "something", there is no better value in San Francisco then the Green Tortoise. Furthermore, like a “gateway”, the on-site travel office, and unique bus tours, offer a “on-the-road”, hostel-like way to best... experience San Francisco, Seattle or the “Awesome” Southwest. The employees are superb, the free food is excellent quality, the historic building and the music that has been created in the ‘turn of the century’ ballroom, has changed many travelers’ lives, mine included. For about one-dollar per hour you can experience S.F at its best.

First of all, there are way more than 1 shower/toilet rooms. In fact, I think there is like five per floor plus a bunch downstairs in the lobby!! Each one is different, plus there are lots of other little 'quirky' things in the hostel which make it unique, kooky, charming and an u...tter joy to spend time in. Sure, some of the fixtures in the Ballroom are a little tatty and worn - but the beds are large and roomy, the ceilings high, the bathrooms are plenty and you can get yourself free dinner three times a week! What else? - well, the free breakfasts everyday, the free use of internet and the provision of linen and towels for your stay. This hostel is in a great location, allowing the carefree traveller to branch out in a different direction everyday - and always see something new. It is busy and loud in the streets below at night, but to be honest, San Francisco has SO much to offer every single day, that by the time you get back and hit the pillow, not even an earthquake will wake you! I will most definately be using this hostel again.

The worst hostel I've ever stayed in! It's noisy at night. The ballroom is pumping out music until 3am. It's in a red light district which isn't particularly nice/safe to walk around at night. The decor hasn't been touched since the 70s. The staff don't even say thank you when you pay. I wouldn't go back to that dump in a million years!

My husband and I spent a weekend at Casa Madrona in September, 10. The staff was courtious and attentive. We stayed in one of the newly remodeled rooms and were pleased. The view off our balcony was enjoyable. My only issue was with the noise from the street traffic in the early mornings. The garbage trucks run every morning making quite a commotion.

Apparently this has new management - well it needed it. My Father in Law stayed there last year, on my recommendation, and the hotel staff were extremely unhelpful when he found bed bugs in his bed and were reluctant to move him to the disabled access room we had booked. Unbelievably bad.

Checked in yesterday. Nice room, although no one at the front desk knew about Facebook programs. Tough with housekeeping. Not sure of the need to ask "why?" when u ask for additional towels or letting me know that I have pillows when I request feather pillows. Concierge staff nice and knowledgeable. If there were a hundred stars, I would give it a hundred-star rating. I would stay in this hostel over a 5 star hotel, or any of those big name hotels. Anything. This was the best experience ever. I was in San Francisco for two days, and this hostel alone made my trip. It was my favorite part of all of San Francisco. Nicest people aro...und, most outgoing, upbeat, and helpful staff. Not a single complaint. I researched all the area hostels before choosing, this one just stood out. Additionally, their option to make a reservation over Facebook without a credit card was so helpful. And it turned out to be an epic win. I almost want to move to San Francisco just so I can just live in this hostel. Am I saying too many nice things? I don't care...this place will rock your socks off. Nice common room for everyone to hang out in, and I met some great people from all over the world. Heavily recommend staying here.

Without ever having been to San Francisco before and with no rhyme or reason for turning up, I managed to find myself lodged in the Tradewinds and in the good graces of Dave and have never been the same since. There are, for each of us, a few experiences so intense that they change us for ever. For so many people, that experience comes in San Francisco and within the narrow building with all the stairs and the rich aroma of Hunan cooking. For me, it has been only a month but feels like a lifetime since I was last climbing the stairs. The only advice I can give to those reading is to open your mind and your heart, throw yourself at San Francisco and try to stick to PT in the meantime.

This place is a home away from home. Friendly and welcoming staff add to a clean and comfortable resting pad. I second the tp comment but I would come back any day. Close to everything one might need [transportation, food, parks..] There is so much to be appreciated in staying at a hostel where you don't feel like you have to hide out... in your room or vacate the building.

Many a time my home away from home, and a lovely place... If you need privacy there are many other options, if you're worried about your stuff in a stainless steal locker you can get a safe deposit box a block away on bank row. Great staff and great guests.... mostly... I'd pay a buck extra a night for some cushioned 2 ply tp, but that's just me...
