"Room was small but comfortable. Hotel is close to everything and on the cable-car route which made getting around the city very easy. Plenty of restaurants nearby and minutes from Fishermans Wharf. Starlight room gets busy on Wednesday nights but if you dont get in,the bar in the hotel lobby makes excellent drinks."

"Our family enjoyed our stay at the Sir Francis Drake during our recent visit. The hotel greeters with their bright red regal attire were delightful and eager to assist. The decor and architecture of the lobby and mezzanine are elegant and classical. As an older hotel, our room was smaller than we would have preferred, but clean and tasteful. The hotel's parking fee for two nights was excessive beyond reason."

"The staff was wonderful! I was plugging in my cell phone charger and the outlet arched and shocked me. I reported this to the front dest and they moved us to a JR suite and offered us a discount on our dinner at Scalas. A total surprise as I was not expecting that at all and was only informing them as it was a fire hazard. They were attentive and kind. I would go back."

"We stayed at Sir Francis Drake for a weekend trip and I absolutely loved the location. The hotel is situated in Union Square, which is filled with places to shop and dine. Being central, the price for transportation (cab, trolley, etc.) to nearby theaters, North Beach, and Fisherman's Wharf is minimal. Although the hotel was a bit old, the staff was friendly and accomodating. I requested a room with a view and was not disappointed. I had a view of the Bay Bridge and Union Square. My only complaint was that the bathroom door would not shut completely, leaving no privacy. The Starlite Room was a convenient treat for my party. Live music and well made drinks(expensive)made the night a blast. And we never had to leave the hotel! Overall, it was a good experience and would recommend it."

"The Sir Francis Drake is a wonderful old hotel. Service and atmosphere are great, but because it is an older hotel the rooms tend to be small and the bathrooms are tiny. But in San Francisco you don't spend much time in the room and the location more than makes up for the lack of space."

"I was very satisfied with my hotel experience at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. As a single traveler, I felt safe and secure. I enjoyed the ambience of the hotel and its great accessiblity to major attractions in the city. I cannot stress enough the convenience of the Drake. Any request(s) that I made with reference to service was promptly provided. My hotel room was comfortable, pleasant and free from any noise. I rested very well. If I happened to be a bit slow exiting my room in the morning, housekeeping was considerate of my timing and waited util I left the room in order for them to clean. The only thing that I wished for was a bathroom bar to steady myself while showering or bathing. I will make a special request for this equipment when I travel in the future. The concierge's service was particularly efficient and helpful. Paige, Sylvia and Karen made things happen for the hotel guests. Let me also mention Tyler who was such a great ambassador long before I arrived at the hotel. I appreciate his professionalism and courtesy. Since my stay at the hotel was for 8 days and 7 nights, I would have enjoyed a special 30 minutes for the hotel to set aside a mix and mingle time with other guests who might have desired to attend. Guests represented many countries with vast experiences and this would have been a highlight. Challenging but doable. There is no question that I will recommend the Sir Francis Drake to my family and family who travel to San Franciso. All the best for exceeding excellence in service at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel."

"I always like classic old hotels, and thought, given the description of the property on the web site, as well as the photos I would be getting that. However the "non-smoking" room was non-smoking, the hallway and surrounding rooms were not and it reeked of smoke. The king "suite" was on the 4th floor looking at an airshaft, with a bathroom where the shower curtain didn't meet the tub and got water on the floor every time. The site mentioned parking, but did not say it was $50 per day, and took 25-30 minutes each time to retrieve the car."

Rooms were adequate for a big city hotel and we really enjoyed our stay. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a place in San Francisco. The only thing I wish I knew ahead of time was the location of the elevator so we didn't have to schlep our luggage up the stairs. It was late when we arrived, we were tired and no one was around to tell us to use the elevator, so we dragged our stuff. Otherwise, the doorman in the Beefeater's uniform was great!"

"This hotel was a huge disappointment. The first room I was given was so small I was afraid I could not fit my luggage in the room. Really I couldn't wheel it in I had to lift it over the bed. After finding the bathroom in what I assumed was a closet the ceiling was actually blistering and modling. I called to the front desk and asked for another room and was told that all the room except suites were this size. I asked for the suite and was told there were only 3 in the hotel and they were booked. Mike at the front desk was polite and helpful and put me in a room with 2 queen beds which was only slightly larger and though the bathroom was tiny the ceiling was not diseased. All of the woodwork and plater is original from the 1920's, and looks it. This place was shockingly bad."

"The location is fabulous, the lobby is beautiful. The room was very tiny. There was hardly enough room in the bathroom to turn around. The bathroom door did not lock and the tub was slippery. There was no ventilation in the bathroom. There was no coffee maker so you had to leave your room in the morning to go buy coffee or get room service. Considering the price we paid if was okay, however. The parking situation was lousy. $52 to park and they misplaced my ticket when I checked out so I waited 45 minutes and watched all the people who checked out after me leave before I did. Restaurant at the top of the Hotel was elegant and fabulous with impeccable service and delicious food. Sunday Brunch is a "drag show"....I will try to catch it next time. All in all for my very brief stay it was okay. Next time I will just get a larger room."

"I normally prefer Kimpton hotels, and had actually recommended this location to our SF office for a price-value option, but after staying there I have second thoughts. The front desk staff was superb and everybody there is very friendly, so the service gets three stars if not four. But the rooms are very tiny and DATED. They have tried to upgrade things, but this property needs a complete makeover to fit the standards of other Kimpton hotels, like the George in Wash DC. That should be the model they strive to maintain. So, if you want proximity to the Square, just kitty corner from the St. Francis, it's a wonderful location, just be prepared for a B- room. I also had difficult with my air-card internet connection for those of who you don't want to pay $15 a nite to rent wifi access."

"My husband and I checked into the Drake for the last 2 nights of our honeymoon. When we arrived around noon, we were given a room on a corner that was very small. I'm not picky about bathrooms, but this one was so tiny, there was not even a place for us to keep our toothbrushes in there. I went down to the front desk, I could see other rooms being cleaned -- they were clearly larger. The young man at the front desk was very nice and very helpfuls: he offered to upgrade us at no charge to the "tower level" where the rooms were larger - he wanted our honeymoon to be perfect. This sounded great, so I accepted, and he told me that the room was not ready yet, but would be by 3:00 (the regular check-in time). We headed out for some lunch and sight-seeing, having been told that our luggage would be moved to the new room -- we just needed to stop by to pick up new keys when we came back. Well, at 4:00 we returned to find that the new room was not yet ready - apparently housekeeping had never cleaned it. The friendly front desk staff gave us coupons for a free drink at the bar while we waited. About half an hour later, we were given the keys to our new room. Then, of course, we had to remind them to bring our luggage from the old room. The room had been hastily serviced - the duvet cover was laid on top of the spread (instead of being around it), a window latch was broken so the window would not close all the way and a light in the bathroom was burnt out. No biggie, I thought - they'll fix this stuff tomorrow. The next day, we went out for a full day of sight-seeing. When we came back to change before dinner, the room had not been made up by housekeeping at all. When we left I stopped by the front desk to ask them to have the room cleaned and the window fixed (it was 50 degrees and windy) and the staff apologized profusely and promised it would be done. They aslo gave us vouchers for free contintal breakfast the next day. Problem solved! Except that when we got back fro"

The front desk wasn't too nice either and didn't really care or ask how our stay was. Its at a really good location next to everything we wanted and the price was fine except parking charges. "This is a well known hotel, however I had some problems with it. When we checked in they had overbooked the room I was in and we had to settle for a smaller room. They did give us a credit for the restaurants. The staff was great so it made up for the mistakes made."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Some of the reviews are quite correct; bathrooms were quite small. Only one Aveda product, the soap. No coffee pot until we asked. Spotty wireless service. However, the room was quite clean, the beds very comfy and for the price it was very acceptable. I'd stay there again."

"The Sir Francis Drake is a little old and tired inside the rooms, but they do a good job of keeping things clean. You caould not ask for a better location, step outside and the cable car stop is right there. A Starbucks downstairs and Sears Fine Foods for breakfast right across the street."

"The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We loved the lobby bar and Scala's restaurant for happy hour. Very beautiful hotel in the heart of Union Square. The room was very small, but we didn't mind. It was clean. We would love to stay here again next time!"
